STUBBS Family History

This is one of the most ancient of English surnames. It is of pre 7th century origins, and is found in the spellings of Stubb(e)s and Stobb(e)s. It maybe topographical but is usually locational deriving from the village of 'Stubbs' near Pontefract in the West Riding of Yorkshire, and virtually all the early name recordings are found in this area. The village was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as 'Istop', this no doubt being an attempt by a Norman-French clerk to understand the broad dialect of the north. What is certain is that the origin is from the word 'stybb' and this refers to an area of ground covered by tree stumps, probably following a forest fire...
