This given name is believed to be composed of the Welsh elements "cyn", chief, and "(g)wr", man, hero, with the suffix of quality "ig", or it may be cognate with he Olde English pre 7th Century "Cyneric", a compound of the elements "cyne", royal, and "ric", power. The latter appears as "Kenricus" and "Chenricus" in the Domesday Book of 1086 for Suffolk, and in 1093, Cynwrig Hir Edeirnion freed one Gruffudd ap Cynan from Chester prison...
