McCarty Family History
This famous Irish clan surname descends from the early kings of Ireland. Recorded in the spellings of MacCarhty, McCarthy, MacCarty and McCarty, it is an anglicized form of the Gaelic "Mac Carthaigh", the prefix "Mac" denoting son of, plus the byname "Carthach" meaning "loving". Given that the clan were long famous for their territorial and disputes with their neighbours, may suggest that the name was a nickname, and an ironic one at that! My ggg grandfather James McCarty and wife Bridget (Cummings) came to the US around 1850 and settled in Berkshire County Massachusetts in the town of Sheffield. James is my brick wall. I have no record or details and where in Galway they were from. One obit says Killoan, but I have not found that townland or parish. I'm stuck.

My ggg Jacob McCarty was born 1825 and died 1875. Lived in Bloomington, Indiana Monroe co. He was married to Nancy Wilson and both are buried in Princeton, Indiana. He is my brick wall. I cannot get beyond him. Then, on my mothers side I have traced back 30 great grandparents through Dennis McCarty and the McCarty-Masters connection but cannot figure out were or how these two sides may have been one family.

My great grandmother, was Mary Grace McCarty. Her father was Overton Gallant McCarty. His father was John McCarty who was married to Burchet Cook. Iโm not sure what part of Ireland my family originates from but I would like to hear from any McCarty people.

My grandfather was Thomas Jerome McCarty born in Chicago, Illinois June 7,1921. His father was Richard Edward (?) McCarty (he traded commodities in Chicago) and my great great grandfather came to America through Ellis Island and his name was Timothy Francis McCarty. My mom Mary Ellen McCarty told me that our family comes from Clare and Cork counties. I would love to learn more.
