This interesting name is of Old French origin, and is an early medieval occupational surname for a barber. The derivation is from the Old French "barbier", Anglo-Norman French "barber", from the Latin "barbarius", a derivative of "barba", beard. The barber of the Middle Ages was a skilled practitioner; he not only cut hair and shaved beards, but also acted as a surgeon and tooth-puller. Job descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the namebearer, and later became hereditary. The development of the surname includes the following examples: Thomas le Barber (1282, London) and Seykin le Barbier (1299, ibid.), and the modern surname has two forms, Barber and Barbour, the latter is found mainly in Scotland and Northern Ireland...Select Audience

My Barber line comes from Asa Barber, 1761, North Carolina. I believe William Barber 1755, North Carolina, may have been the father of Asa or Choice Asa Barber. I have been trying for years to find out where my first Barber entered the US and where he came from in Ireland. I have also done my ancient DNA through MyTrueAncestry. I know this older DNA program probably have more mistakes, but the ancient DNA matches me up to Clan Domnaill. But, more and more, I find evidence of the connection. Any ideas how I might find my relative who came from the old country? This is so exciting to find this site!!!

I have no genetic evidence, I only have family history in book form. It would seem our family history can only be traced as far as Yorkshire; appx 1300(ish) upon entry to the USA, appx 1500. Any pointers short of a genetic profile to figure out my paternal origin?

(Part 1 of 3) The Barber name has a long history in British Isles, but now DNA and some recorded history says their origin is from the Emerald Island. The Barber story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup B2] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Barber surname origin is from Clan Domnaill [DNA Tribe R1b-L513, Subgroup B1] and relations who remain in Ireland take the modern surname (O’)Donnelly, McDonald and Donohue in Ireland.

It is a very old name which appears in the 5th century Roman inscriptions as Dumnovellaunos in Brittany meaning “Deep Valour” equivalent to Irish Domhnaill. But how could this be?
