TIMMONS Family History

This is a medieval diminutive form of the Ancient Greek "Timotheos" and the later Middle English "Timothy." The original baptismal name translated as "he who honours god" although which particular God is not clear, except that "he" was pagan. However this did not stop the later Christians from popularising it in its own right, the first Timothy being recorded as the companion of St. Paul. The name was introduced into England by the Knight Templars, more commonly known as the Crusaders, after 1066, and all early forms are diminutives of one sort or another, the surname as Timothy being extremely rare...

I sent one response. Not sure if it went through. Matthias Timmons d. 1860 buried in Timmons Cemetery near Logansport, IN. His son James Wesley b. 1827 Sussex County, De., fought in the Civil War with Indiana's illustrious 72nd Mounted Infantry in Wilder's Lightning Brigade. He is buried in a Dunkard Cemetery. His wife was Martha Jane Olinger born in Tennessee. James Wesley's son, James Wesley came to Colorado with two older brothers to work as a teamster hauling buffalo bones to Oklahoma. Teamster Timmons returned to Indiana in the late 1880's and married the Widow Sidenbender, Mary Ellen Snethen. My grandmother Martha Ann Timmons married Omer Martin and I am the daughter of her son Clarence James Martin. James Wesley II's stories about Colorado influenced his grandsons Thomas and Clarence (Jim) to move to Colorado in the 1940's.

Scott Jackson update, I am sorry but my previous email mentions Simmons/Williams surnames; I meant they were all Timmons.

Via dna, it seems that I am part Timmons. My origins start from William Hardie Williams, 1839-1906, born in Whitesburg, Alabama, going back to William T. Williams, 1655-1707, born in Leinster, Carlow Parish, and dying in Somerset, Maryland USA. I can trace back to a Ben Simmons, born 1570 in Ireland. Do any of these names ring a bell? are they part of you Timmons family?
