MCGARRY Family History

Recorded in many spellings as shown below, this is a surname of Gaelic origins. However spelt it is one of the y developments of the original pre 10th century 'Mag Fhearadhaigh'. The name translates as 'the son of the descendant of the fearless one', a meaning which no doubt helped to account for its undoubted popularity. It is found in spellings which include MacCarry, McHarry, McGarrie, McGarry, MacAree, M'Garry, Megarry, and in County Monaghan - King!. This latter form is a strange anglicised corruption which resulted from the similarity of the sound 'Mac an Ri', meaning 'the son of king', although there is no logical connection...

#4 McGarry

Hello My ancestor of interest is James Burke McGarry. Born in Ireland (not sure if North or South) <>1883. Joined British army. Sent to fight in South African Boer war. Remained in South Africa where he married Grace Howard 16th July 1907. The middle name he used on marriage certificate (Burke) is unusual. Cannot find any James with that middle name, despite looking for years. It is possible that this was his mother's maiden name and that he may have been the first born, but I cannot find that relationship either. I am looking for names of his parents/siblings. Any help would be appreciated.
