KINANE Family History
Recorded in several spellings including O' Kinane, O' Kinnane, Kinane, Kinnane, Quinane, Quinnane and possibly others, this is a medieval Irish surname. It originates from the pre 10th century Gaelic O' Cuinneain, meaning the male descendant of the son of the hare from "coinin", meaning hare or rabbit. It was presumably a nickname for a fast runner, and like the majority of Irish surnames, given to the original chief of the clan possibly a thousand years ago. It is a Thomond surname, mainly found in North Tipperary, with the variants Quinane and Guinnane.Who have we missed?

Through DNA I have come to discover that my third great grandmother was Catherine Kinane from Tipperary who married John Ryan. I had heard they got married in Upperchurch, Tipperary around 1825 but no evidence. However, I did find a baptism record of 190833 with their known son Jeremiah. I believe Catherine was widowed when she emigrated to Illinois and Then Wisconsin with children, Patrick, my second great grandfather, sister, Mary and brother, Jeremiah. Maybe someone can help me with this. My belief is that Catherine’s parents were Peter Kinane and Kitty Ryan by looking at a DNA cousins family records.
