Recorded in several spelling forms including MacGilmartin, McGilmartin, Gilmartin, Kilmartin and sometimes Martin, this is an Irish surname. It derives from the pre 10th century "Mac Giolla Mhartain", meaning the follower (giolla) of St. Martin, an early saint. The sept is a branch of the O'Neills of Fermanagh and Tyrone, being chiefs in the barony of Clogher, in County Tyrone. Those that moved into Connacht became Kilmartin. When combined together in all the spellings this surname is among the fifty most numerous names in Ireland. At the time of Petty's Census of Ireland in 1659, the Gilmartus and Kilmartins were moving to the territory where they are now chiefly found in Counties Leitrim and Sligo...

I am looking for my Dads Mothers People. The Gilmartin Sisters Lived in Hoboken NJ in 1926 Besy , Moxie and Jenny. Besy Became a Wanzel and Jenny became a Peterson but died in child birth in 1926. She was my dads mother. Her sister Besy (Elizabeth) adopted my dad Thomas. Jenny was Married to Fred Peterson and had a son George also. All the sisters came from Ireland. I know there mother was a Gilmartin but became a Hawks and moved to upstate NY. Moxie had a daughter named Margret and she married a Cliff Giddings and moved to NJ. If anyone knows our family please let me know. I would live to trace my heritage.
