FRANCEY Family History

This is a name of Roman-Latin origins. It derives from "Franciscus", which was originally both an ethnic name used to describe a "Frank", later to be known as a "Frenchman", and a personal name of the 5th century a.d., which means "a free man". In the latter days of the Roman Empire, the Romans were permanently at war with the Franks. It may be that at this time the name was used as a derogatory term by the Romans, for somebody who claimed to be a free man. Be that as it may the later surname, which dated from the 12th century, became hugely popular world wide, there being over two hundred spellings! These range from the English Francis, the French Francois and Frances, the Spanish and Italian Francisco and Francie, to the diminutives Franzel (Germany), the Italian nickname forms Scotti (!), Ciccolini and Zecchi, to the patronymics Francesconi (Italy), Franssen (Germany), Franson (England), and the Polish Franciskiewicz .

Florence Francey Bessemer

I am a Francey. My father was Thomas William Francey. His parents were James George Francey and Harriet E Teevan/Tubman/Francey. Thomas Tubman being her 1st husband until she was widowed in Jan 11 1913 during a visit to New Westminster BC. She had 5 daughters but married James Francey July 1913. My father was born July 14 1914 and was their only child. The family emigrated to the USA July 8 1916 on the SS St Louis. Arrived in NY July 16 1916. James G Francey ,my grandfather's parents were George James and Mary Jane Francey. My father had a younger brother Robert. He had a cousin in Johannesburg South Africa named George Francey . He visited us in NJ when I was a child. He also had an aunt Lillian Francey in Johannesburg S.A. who I havr letters from. In those she mentions Cousin George's family/children. I believe his wife was Babette. Although I was a child I remember this handsome cousin of my father's named George visiting us in NJ on business trips from S.A. They looked like brothers instead of cousins and I have photos of them. I'm sure his cousin George must have been related through an uncle or brother of James Franceys father George J Francey. I don't know much else. I don't know what happened with my grandfather's brother Robert either. I would be interested in any other information that anyone might have on my Dad's relatives and my Franceys.
