This unusual and interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and can derive from a locational name, or from an Olde English pre 7th Century personal name. As a locational surname Ellwood, and its variant forms Elwood and Allwood, derives from the place called Ellwood in Gloucestershire. The placename means "the elder wood", derived from the Olde English "ellern", elder tree, with "wudu", wood. Elwood
My Great Grandfather, Thomas Elwood, came from Stroketown, Roscommon in 1875 and wound up living in Paterson, NJ. He eventually met Mary Nolan, who was also from Roscommon. They married in New Jersey and began their family, having 6 children, May, Joseph, James, John, Catharine, and Sylvester. The one son, John, who was my grandfather, invited his brother, Sylvester, to live with them, when he retired as a Catholic Priest. I do not have any information from any family in Ireland.

In Ireland where Elwood is a fairly common name round Galway, Roscommon and North Clare the name is often interchangeable with Aylward

My father in law was born in glen corrib on galway mayo border he and his wife moved to galway ,his wife being from the island of inishere of coast of galway . They married and reared a family of 11 children my husband being the oldest of the family ,

I have been chasing my family history (DUFFICY) from Clooneigh, Roscommon, Ireland.
My GGG Grandfather Jeremiah "Darby" Dufficy (B:~1791 M: ~1822-28 D: 1875 Strokestown) married who I thought was a Sarah Elard (B: ~1792 D: 01/11/1882 Clooneigh, Roscommon, Ireland.
The name "Elard" was difficult to read on the Parish register for her daughter Catherine Dufficy & son Richard Dufficy however I have just found a very similar Parish register entry and it appears that the name is not Elard but "Elwood".
This makes more sense as there are a number of Elwood's in Roscommon.
If you could check out and provide any additional details (or need more details) than it would be appreciated.

The Elwood story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup A1] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Elwood surname origin is from a Northern Ui Neill [R1b-L513] tribe. The Cenél Eoghan and the tribes of Donegal conquered much of Ulster (Derry and Tyrone).
