The Irish name Kavanagh or Cavanagh and all of its various spellings comes from the gaelic "Caomhánach" meaning "born handsome". The first recorded "Caomhánach" was the son of Diarmuid Mac Murrough, a 1200AD King of ancient Leinster, Donal Caomhánach.

MY GG Grandfather was Edward Cavanagh (middle name may have been Joseph, but not sure) who was the only one (that I know of) who ended up in South Africa. He was born in Bath, England in 1823 of Irish parents. He married Elizabeth Brown in South Africa. I am keen to find out more about his parents and siblings, about whom I know nothing. They may have all been born in the UK, maybe some in Ireland.
